The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Boyne City Main Street Program this week announced a new crowdfunding campaign through Michigan-based crowdfunding platform Patronicity. The campaign will support the project to create a life-size bronze sculpture of a logger near the mouth of the Boyne River drawing in logs, depicting the early lumbering era. If the campaign reaches its crowdfunding goal of $25,000 by April 7, the project will win a matching grant with funds made possible by both state agencies. “The installment of this public art sculpture work not only enhances Boyne City, but also utilizes local talent,” said Michigan Economic Development Corporation community development director Katharine Czarnecki. “We are excited to partner in this project and help build pride and educate locals and tourists on Boyne City’s rich lumbering heritage.”
“Public art projects make an impact when they are part of a larger approach to enlivening a community or downtown space,” said Kevin Elsenheimer, executive director at Michigan State Housing Development Authority. “This creative nod to Boyne City’s lumbering era combined with a self-guided historic walking tour brings the city’s heritage to life.”
The sculpture, which will be created by local sculptor, Martha Sulfridge, will create a life size bronze sculpture of a logger near the mouth of the Boyne River drawing in logs. The project ties in with the new Walkabout Sculpture Show installed in June 2015, showcasing eight sculptures of various mediums throughout the downtown. These are temporary pieces on loan from Michigan artists. The Last River Draw would become the first permanent piece.
